How Does BrainsWay Deep TMS Work?

BrainsWay Deep TMS™ (Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted areas of the brain associated with certain mental health conditions. What To Expect During Treatment

BrainsWay Deep TMS™ treatment is designed to be a comfortable, noninvasive experience that can fit into a patient’s normal routine. During each session, the patient sits comfortably in a chair while a specialized helmet is positioned on the head. The system delivers magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain associated with the condition being treated. Patients remain awake and alert throughout the session, and no anesthesia or sedation is required.

During treatment, patients may feel a tapping sensation on the scalp and hear clicking sounds as the magnetic pulses are delivered. A typical treatment plan involves multiple sessions over several weeks, although the exact schedule will depend on the condition being treated and the provider’s recommendations. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately following a session.

PHQ-9 Depression Test

The 9-question Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) is a diagnostic tool introduced in 2001 to screen adult patients in a primary care setting for the presence and severity of depression.  It rates depression based on the self-administered Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ).  The PHQ is part of Pfizer’s larger suite of trademarked products, called the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD).  The PHQ-9 takes less than 3 minutes to complete and simply scores each of the 9 DSM-IV criteria for depression based on the mood module from the original PRIME-MD.  Primary care providers frequently use the PHQ-9 to screen for depression in patients.
